Graduate Program
With our Civil Engineering graduate programs ranked in the top 100 nationally, you can be confident that your degree will prepare you for your professional career, improve your technical competency, and initiate a life-long learning experience.
The department offers graduate studies leading to either a master’s of science in civil engineering (for students with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering) or a master’s of science in engineering (for students without a civil engineering background). As a graduate student, you can choose between five areas of engineering concentration:
- Environmental and water resources
- Geo-environmental
- Geotechnical
- Structural
- Transportation
At the doctoral level, you can pursue a Ph.D. in civil engineering or the multidisciplinary Ph.D. in infrastructure and environmental systems, which combines courses in engineering, earth sciences, public policy, economics and business.

Mohammad Khalid
Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Environmental Engineering
“I was drawn to UNC Charlotte’s W.S. Lee College of Engineering because of its emphasis on collaborative and interdisciplinary research. The opportunity to work alongside peers and faculty members on joint projects was the trigger that differentiated from other institutions. This journey is not merely an extension of my education but a personal commitment to address the water environment through sustainable solutions.”
Shegufta Zahan Sumaiya
Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Structural Engineering
“As a graduate student, my research focus area is Structural Health Monitoring. UNC Charlotte has the laboratory facilities and advanced equipment to carry out advanced research on Structural Dynamics and Structural Health Monitoring. Also, the faculty here are dedicated and passionate about teaching, very open to discussion.”
