Department Recognitions:

Dr. Nicole Braxtan received the Graduate Award in Teaching Excellence this Spring. Dr. Braxtan demonstrated “a great passion and enthusiasm for teaching”. Her teaching philosophy emphasized a blend between theoretical knowledge and computer applications. Judging from her high student ratings and positive student feedback, students seem to like her teaching method. Support letters submitted by students show evidence of improvement in their learning.

The student testimonials reveal Dr. Braxtan as a professor committed to help students succeed while maintaining high and attainable expectations of them, and providing the needed support and guidance. Dr. Braxtan presented a paper at the American Society of Engineering Educators (ASEE) Conference on educational topics. She developed a new course with a positive outcome for students. She has also been a successful researcher, having secured funding valued at $813,000. She’s used these funds, in collaboration with other faculty, to support or advise 19 graduate students. Outside of the classroom, she has been involved in engineering summer camps and outreach programs.

Several COE faculty members were nominated for this recognition, including Mr. David Naylor who teaches surveying and technical drawing, and leads CEE Senior Design classes and programming.*

Two of Dr. Mariya Munir‘s grad students received a Proposal Development Summer Fellowship (PDSF) from the graduate school in the summer. Congratulations, Sol Park and Adeola Sorinolu.
