Celebrating Student Achievements: Fall 2024 Highlights

Our students continue to excel, making their mark on both local and national stages with impressive accomplishments. Here are some of the recent highlights:

Chideraa Ndbuisi has had an outstanding year. He was awarded a $10,000 external grant from the North Carolina Water Resources Research Institute. Additionally, at the recent NC One Water conference in Raleigh on November 4th, Chideraa earned second place for his poster presentation, titled “Assessment of Microplastic Pollution in Wastewater Treatment Plants: A Focus on Primary and Secondary Solids”, showcasing the impactful work he’s doing in water resources research.

Muthumari Anbumani was recognized for her academic excellence and dedication to transportation engineering, receiving the prestigious 2024 North Carolina Section Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Bowman Kelly Memorial Scholarship.

Two of our exceptional students Seth Cathey & Pegah Reza Ahrabi have received PhD Fellowships, securing opportunities to advance their research and academic journeys with FHWA Dwight D. Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship and PCI Mertz Fellowship, respectively. Both students have been working with Dr. Matt Whelan, Dr. Shenen Chen, and Dr. Nicole Braxtan on prestressed concrete bridges.

Isaac Oyawoye was awarded the Barbara S. and W. Calvin McCall Carolinas Fellowship by the American Concrete Institute. This fellowship recognizes his contributions and potential in advancing innovations within the field of concrete technology.

Mohammad Khalid received the Future Faculty Teaching Fellowship Award, in June 2024.

Nita Khanal was Selected as one of seven Graduate Life Fellows (GLF) for the 2023-2024 from the Center for Graduate Life and Learning (CGLL), UNC Charlotte.

Emmanuel Adeyanju has successfully defended his Doctoral dissertation, titled “Frost Action Mitigation through Engineered Water Repellency: Upscaling from laboratory to field application”.  He will graduate this semester with his PhD.
