Welcome From The Chair
Welcome to the Fall 2024 Newsletter from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering! We’re excited to share this update with you, highlighting the latest developments, achievements, and opportunities in our department. This issue celebrates the outstanding accomplishments of our students, from our “5 Under 25(ish)” recognition tradition to the remarkable achievements of our graduate students. You’ll also find updates on faculty successes, introductions to our newest faculty members, and insights into the vibrant happenings within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE).
As we look ahead to 2025, we’re thrilled to share some exciting initiatives and developments:
- New Partnership with Lansing’s Bridge to Recovery (LBTR):
- We are proud to announce a new memorandum of understanding between LBTR and our department. LBTR is a nonprofit organization led by departmental alum Emily Davis (BSCE, 2012) that supports communities recovering from Hurricane Helene by repairing private bridges and culverts destroyed during the storm, helping residents regain access to their properties. This Spring semester, our department will offer a special course where students will assess damaged sites and develop designs for LBTR to implement. Stay tuned for more details about this impactful collaboration in our Spring 2025 newsletter!
- Launching a New Seminar Series:
- We’re kicking off an engaging seminar series showcasing the broad impact of civil engineering on everyday life. The first event will be held on January 28 at 11:30 a.m., featuring Bryan Walsh, a civil engineer at Duke Energy. Mr. Walsh oversees the Catawba-Wateree’s 11-lake system and will discuss Duke’s innovative approach to water management. Mark your calendars for this exciting session and watch for more information in the coming weeks!
- Expanding Our Faculty Team:
- We’re actively seeking talented individuals to join our faculty in environmental and water resources, structures, and transportation. We look forward to introducing you to our newest members in an upcoming newsletter.
We encourage all of you to stay connected and involved with our department. Whether it’s through mentoring students, judging technical projects, guest speaking in the classroom, or participating in alumni gatherings, there are countless ways to engage. We’ve created a short survey to help us understand how you’d like to contribute. Let us know your interests by completing the survey at this link.
Thank you for being an integral part of our Civil and Environmental Engineering community. Your support and involvement are vital to our success, and we look forward to your continued contributions in the years ahead.
Warm regards,
Glenn Moglen
