New Faculty Spotlight: Dr. María Guimaraes Joins Structures Group at UNC Charlotte

María Guimaraes is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the structures group at UNC Charlotte. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Construction Engineering from the Universidad Nacional del Nordeste in Argentina, a Master’s in Civil Engineering from the University of Newcastle in the UK, and a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Her teaching interests focus on asset management of civil structures. Before joining UNC Charlotte, María worked at the Electric Power Research Institute, specializing in inspection, degradation, and management of civil structures in the nuclear sector. She also contributed to research and development at Aalborg Portland in Denmark, where she focused on cement manufacturing and CO₂ uptake in concrete.

A Fulbright scholar, María is passionate about promoting energy literacy among youth and inspiring the next generation of engineers.
