Environmental Engineering Outreach Event
We recently had the pleasure of hosting an engaging and inspiring environmental engineering outreach event for nearly 100 high school students, and we are thrilled to reflect on its success and impact.
The event, held at Lake Norman State Park, on February 16th, 2024, aimed to introduce students to the exciting world of environmental engineering and inspire the next generation of environmental leaders. Through a series of interactive workshops, hands-on activities, and engaging presentations, students had the opportunity to explore various aspects of environmental engineering and learn about its crucial role in addressing pressing global challenges.
One of the highlights of the event was the hands-on water quality testing activity (pictured) led by state park rangers, where students were able to apply principles of environmental engineering to analyze water samples and understand the importance of clean water for human health and the environment. This activity not only provided students with practical experience, but also highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of environmental engineering and its real-world applications.
In addition to the hands-on water quality event, students got the opportunity to learn from industry partners from EnviroScience and Duke Energy, as well as Department Chair and Professor, Dr. Glenn Moglen. These interactions allowed students to gain insights into potential career paths in environmental engineering and learn about the diverse opportunities available in the field.
We are incredibly grateful to all the volunteers and presenters who helped make this event possible. Their dedication, expertise, and passion for environmental engineering played a vital role in inspiring and empowering the next generation of environmental leaders. A special thank you to Kelly Anderson from the Office of Student Development and Success and Macy Dillard from our department for co-organizing this event.
As we reflect on the success of this outreach event, we are excited about the potential impact it will have on the future of environmental engineering and the broader community. By fostering interest and enthusiasm for environmental issues among high school students, we hope to cultivate a new generation of problem-solvers and innovators who are committed to creating a more sustainable and resilient future for all.
We look forward to building on the momentum of this event and continuing to engage and inspire students through future outreach initiatives. Together, we can make a difference and create positive change for our planet and future generations.
